The 80's - the era of the HOOK!

One of the things I like so much about 80's metal were the hooks that all the great bands had. Hair metal bands like Bon Jovi, Warrant, Cinderella, Winger, Def Leppard, White Lion, etc. as well as more regular metal bands like Tesla, Skid Row, and even Judas Priest all knew how to write that great hook that made the song stick in your head for hours.

There was no better hook-writer than Michael Sweet. Stryper, to me, is the grand master of the hook. No one did it better.

Is it just me---or am I hearing more lead guitar and ... just a bit more 80s style metal creeping back into the mainstream?

I wish I could give you some examples... but I'm SO not into the new bands -- I don't know any

Our church is doing a series on the 10 Commandments this summer and today we were doing #8. At the end of the message about stealing, my Pastor talked about stewardship and the proper perspective on money, and how our money actually belongs to God and we just manage it. I am a member over on the Seymore Duncan forum and this one was a forum member only one off design at first but is now available through the Custom shop. The concept was a Custom wind with an Alnico8 mag and a PA poles.

Hey guys, I wanted to know if you could make some recommendations on studio monitors. I want some for my computer and thought you may know of some descent ones for a minimal budget. Also, I have a soundmax soundcard in my computer. Is this soundcard acceptable to use in a recording situation? I've used it on Brad's discs that I've played on.

I mean I think I know it when I hear it... BIG guitars, choruses, great lead guitar work, attitude, fun, leads guitar work, melodic, bangin... and oh yeah--did I mention good lead guitar work??? ...but a lot of that could sort of apply to a lot of genres of rock and metal...

So, if you had to define "80s metal" in a couple lines.... how would you do it?

I have a 73 Fender Tele Custom Deluxe---AWESOME axe!!!! It's only got like two parts that are stock... the body, the volume knobs (not the pots) and the tuning keys... ok--3 parts. Everything else is aftermarket...

Anyway--just had an EMG H4 put in it and had the whole electronics cavitiy lined with foil---and the report I hear from my tech are that this thing ...

When you really learn how to hammer onto a note and pull off to another note... and then when you learn how to get that picking hand involved... DUDE... it just opens up whole new worlds!
